Gum & Dental Specialist Centre — Regenerate for good

Peri-implant mucositis & peri-implantitis

Problems with an existing implant

Implants can develop inflammation in the gum and bone around them. Caught early, it is usually manageable. We see implants placed anywhere — locally, interstate or overseas.

See us if your implant has

  • Bleeding when you brush around it
  • Swelling, soreness or pus
  • A bad taste near the implant
  • Gum shrinking back, or metal showing
  • A crown that feels loose

Two stages

Peri-implant mucositis

Inflammation of the gum around the implant, without bone loss. Usually reversible with thorough cleaning.

Peri-implantitis

Inflammation that has caused loss of the supporting bone. Needs specialist treatment and tends to progress if left alone.

What increases the risk

  • A history of gum disease
  • Plaque build-up, or a crown shape that is hard to clean under
  • Leftover cement under a cemented crown
  • Smoking
  • Missing regular maintenance visits

How we treat it

  1. 01

    Assessment

Measuring the gum around the implant and X-rays to see the bone level. Bring any records you have — implant brand, size and past X-rays help.

  2. 02

    Non-surgical cleaning

Decontaminating the implant surface and removing any cement. If the crown is hard to clean, we work with your dentist to adjust it.

  3. 03

    Surgery, where needed

For peri-implantitis, surgical access to clean the implant and, in suitable cases, rebuild bone. Occasionally an implant can't be saved and is better removed and replaced.

  4. 04

    Maintenance

Regular reviews to keep the area stable.

Common questions

My implant was placed overseas. Can you help?

Yes. Bring whatever documents you have. If the implant brand is unknown, X-rays can often identify the system.

It doesn't hurt — should I still come in?

Yes. Like gum disease, implant problems are often painless until advanced. Bleeding around an implant is worth checking.

Will I lose the implant?

Many implants can be kept, especially when treated early. Your assessment will give you a realistic outlook and options.
